In honor of today's Firefox 3 release, Microsoft's Internet Explorer team gave a cake to Mozilla.

Too many incompatible plug-ins and extensions; out of the 15 or so I have only 3 were compatilbe.
Even Adblock plus was removed.
Firefox only found updates for a couple.
I had to uninstall and go back to an older version.
I think a lot of people are going to be having major gripes in finding and reinstalling compatible extensions _________________ The time has come, To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax, Of cabbages--and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot-- And whether pigs have wings. |

All I know is when I installed it the compatibility checker only found a couple of verified ones. Adblock plus was not enabled -- I didn't really look to see if I could.
Personally I don't want to go down the whole list testing and visiting homepages to see if there are updates.
They need to work this out with compatiblity check module that runs when you first install. If something works, then it should pass the checker. I don't know how they do this, I assume the module developer must vouch for it in some way.

Go check for updates on the site for plugins. I heard the check for updates part doesn't pick up the ones updated for Firefox 3 because many are still being tested. _________________ UMG UT3 Warfare and vCTF Admin

Actually I'm perfectly happy with the old version -- every previous one has installed without a glitch as far as past plugins are concerned.
I don't jump through hoops without a good reason. And even the loss of a couple would be a reason not to use Firefox so much.
I may give it another try and take my time about checking and refilling the extensions list on my Vista Desktop or XP Notebook system which is secondary -- but on my primary -- I'm going to leave it until I know what's really compatible.
I still think this is going to annoy a lot of folks and was surprisingly ill done.
Since Adblock plus actually came with the earlier version -- you'd think they'd have atleast tested and verified that before putting this out and throwing users for a loop. _________________ The time has come, To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax, Of cabbages--and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot-- And whether pigs have wings. |

My ISP uses DHCP. I didn't check but I probably had a different IP each time. Regardless I doubt if they're checking IP's for that reason. Let's say that you download it today to 10.20.30.40, and your neighbor is assigned that IP tomrrow, it's a unique download with the same IP. _________________ 5incerely,

Ha! Just like I predicted.
I'll probably wait until around September or so to upgrade. That will give all the teenage code monkeys plenty of time to update their stuff, and if it's not updated by the time they have to go back to school, then it'll never be updated anyway. |

Probably most extension are -- but there is no way to verify this at the outset except to rely on what information they provide.
Firefox is a mature browser, no longer the "new kid on the block", so I was surprised at how poorly implemented this update process was. Instead of shooting for some record download event they should have configured the plug-in compatibilty checker to scan the plug-in and extensions during the install -- and advise on what might be incompatible and provide detailed instructions for managing the problem. Users could choose to proceed or cancel.
Instead I found myself put-off by the compatiblity check after the install and launch of the browser and decided on uninstalling. I think it was also necessary to replace the applications data from a backup as well to get the old version to work once again.
There is a way to hack and disable the compatibilty checker after the install -- but this should not be what users are left to do.
If Microsoft had done this with IE final releases -- there would be a hue and cry. _________________ The time has come, To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax, Of cabbages--and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot-- And whether pigs have wings. |

Yes it does this after the install. But you can uninstall the disabled ones and install newer versions quite easily.
IE7 has less than 1% of the extendability of Firefox, and is limited to support on PCs (and a few MACs). IE isn't free either. |

Except that when you run their so-called check for compatible updates -- it comes up with practically none of what you have. So you are left to manually investigate for yourself.
There are some very good add-ons for IE (IE7 Pro for example) -- however you are quite right there is much you can do with Firefox that cannot be done in IE.
I'm not knocking Firefox -- I like it and use it exclusively for stream ripping from sites like Deezer that cannot be done in IE.
Not sure by what you mean "IE isn't Free". What did you pay for yours? _________________ The time has come, To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax, Of cabbages--and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot-- And whether pigs have wings. |

The latest version is only available for XP/Win2003 or higher. The hidden cost is that of the OS.
Right now anyone can download it but in the past you would need to pass the product key validation test twice (to download and to install). |
