| Is it free for everyone? Does it work? I'm always a little mistrustful of freeware, especially with something as important as my virus killer. Why would anyone invest their life into writing virus updates for nothing? |

There is always a debate whether free versions for anti virus are worth it or not, in my opinion it depends mostly on the habits of the user than on the program itself, for the most part programs like Avast or AVG should do the work, but for the users who want to have the extra edge there are several paid version from where to choose from, NOD32 takes the first place in this category in my opinion. |

As far as paid software goes, I'm all for Kaspersky. NOD32's heuristics have improved to the point where substantially fewer false positives have been reported, but I still prefer KAV as it has real-time HTTP scanning and receives updates on an hourly basis, with new definitions released 40-50 minutes in between occasionally. _________________

| What about Norton or McAfee? If you're going to pay I'd think these would be at the top of the list. |

Norton is the biggest resource hog non-virus catching piece of garbage I've ever used. I was forced to use it in Enterprise solutions because management bought into the advertising and they felt the 600 bucks for the server/client version was somehow better because it cost so much.
I've used AVG free version without an issue since 2001.
I always recommend it to my clients and I have yet to hear anyone complain about it.
The only reason I asked if the Pro version (which is NOT free) at the top of this thread was legit was because I own (meaning I bought) every game and piece of software I run. In other words, no warez or free downloaded music for me. |

They're both complete jokes. Overpriced, bloated, resource hogs is all they are. I've heard too many times that Norton can detect but not eliminate detected threats while leaving behind a rootkit after uninstall, and McAfee's basic antivirus uses 11 processes, while their internet security package uses a whopping 43 (Windows XP Pro on its own doesn't even use that many), sucking up all resources it can. Keep away. _________________

Norton used to be good a long time ago (Win95-ME <-lol). Since then it has gotten bloated. I always knew McAfee was crap.. lol'd at the fake reviews claiming it was the best. Before that was F-Prot in my DOS days.
For the past two years I've been using AVG and never had any problems with it. (switched from Symantec corporate which is a little slimmer than NAV)
I've heard lots of good comments about nod32 and kapersky, However they are not free..... and are not US based companies if that matters.
Nod32-> Slovakia
Kapersky -> Russia
AVG-> USA, Europe
Having a good firewall helps a lot as it hampers virus/spyware activity and lets you know right away if any unknown programs want to use your network.
I recommend Zonealarm, however on Vista the built in firewall is quite good as well. |

If the software is reliable, it doesn't matter where it's from. |

http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/comparatives.html
After seeing these results I'm tempted to try Avira Antivir
In large corporate environments the number of companies using non-us based AV products is very small. Dont you think this is odd considering that licenses for foreign software is cheaper?
I think its a matter of trust. |

Check the recent proactive test results. It confuses me somewhat; Kaspersky and NOD32 got an Advanced+ rating but picked up much less than Avira, which got a Standard rating. I'm not sure which one is supposed to be better in that test, really..... _________________

Thats the "Certification level reached*". For virus/worm/.. catching results Avira is leading. |
