Have you tried pressing the F8 key from the git g0 to reach the boot menu?
There you can select the option to "disable automatic restart" -- which will atleast allow you to read the BSOD (look for a file name) -- and also try Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking.
Also, do you have an XP installation CD? _________________ The time has come, To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax, Of cabbages--and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot-- And whether pigs have wings. |

Try "Clean Boot" troubleshooting:
CLEAN BOOT TROUBLESHOOTING technique
First, restart in Safe Mode if necessary -- (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu) or Normal mode
Then:
Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.
See this link for detailed information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 << for Vista, but applies equally to XP, and better written.
Now restart and test the issue at hand
If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.
If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.
Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.
Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

And you might want to test the ram as well:

1. Check your fans! If a fan dies, the computer will keep restarting to protect itself against a meltdown. Were you hearing any weird sounds from the computer in the past couple of months? That would have been the moans of a dying fan.
2. Did you try restoring to an earlier checkpoint? _________________ 5incerely,

There wasn't any weird noises from the comp, and I can't try using an earlier checkpoint I can't even make it past the windows xp logo |

no blue screen of death, only the screen turns black for a couple of sec after the windows xp logo shows, then it restarts again from the beginning until it reaches the logo again, and then it restarts again and again |

Can I use a restore point even in safe mode? I didn't wanna do it from the start cause my parents created the restore points, not me, and I was thinking that some of their info could get lost if I do it, but the comp is unusable like this.
Edit: oh fuk it I'm gona try it |

1)The virus has been completely removed right? Which one was it?
2)XP seems to be crashing before it gets to your startup list. Its likely a corrupt or missing system file (or driver).
in safe mode...
1) run eventvwr.msc. i.e start->run-> type eventvwr.msc->press enter
2) open the system log. Go through the last few log entries to see what failed. Disabling a piece of hardware in safe mode may resolve hardware issues. running "sfc /scannow" will Scan all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. It may ask for a XP CD or folder containing XP CD files. If its a branded PC theres likely a folder in C:\ or on a hidden partition that contains those files (look for a i386 folder)
3) when XP crashes it creates two log files in the root folder (c:\). Try opening c:\bootlog.txt or c:\ntbtlog.txt with notepad in safe mode.
(http://www.greatis.com/security/bootlog.htm is a tool that makes analyzing those files easier) |

does anyone know how to fix this problem? this is what happened so far:
At first the comp had some viruses/spyware so I downloaded 2 programs, avast and a-squared. I installed a-squared first and ran it, it caught about 15 entries I told it to delete them then I ran it a second time to see if the comp was clean but the same 15 entries with th same names were caught again by a-squared and I told it to delete them again, but after a third time of running it I saw they were still there, then I restarted the computer in order to insall avast, when the computer restarted the icon for a-squared on the dektop looked weird but no biggie since it didn't get rid of the problem I just uninstalled a-squared, next I installed avast and as soon as I ran it, it caught a virus in the memory and it suggested to restart the computer so avast can scan the system before the virus in the memory has a chance to run, I did so, the computer restarted and avast started scanning a finding several problems, since it took forever I told him to eliminate all threats by pressing 2, after it did its job it's when the problem of the comp restarting by itself over and over showed up |
