Has anyone noticed nVidia is not supporting the older cards with the latest driver releases ?
200 series:177.35 June 17, 2008 (activates built-in support for Physx)
Here is a link to the 177.39 version of the drivers for all 8 series cards as well.
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=264880
Note: PhysX acceleration will only work with the cards based on G92 & GT200 GPU's
To Install:
-Get the zip file of the 177.39 driver from the above link. Extract it to a folder like c:\nvidia. make sure there are no long names/spaces in the folder path.
-get the modified inf (support for older 8 series cards) from the same page ( http://rapidshare.com/files/123711223/177.39_XP_32bit_international_nv4_disp.7z theres also one for vista), overwrite the original inf that came with the driver zip file.
-install and restart.
Worked for me. Note that these are nVidia drivers but they have not been officially released. They may never be released for older cards...

It's really hard though... because right now, with the price war and high performance cards being (almost literally) dirt-cheap, it's almost impossible to make a decision. ATI's 4850 beats the 9800GTX for the same price, but ATI's drivers tend to have a not-so-good reputation behind them, and in less than a week we'll see the releases of both the GTX260 and 9800GTX+, the latter of which beats the 4850 for 30 bucks more, and the former of which toasts everything below the 4870 (unknown as of yet if the 4870 beats the GTX260). Gaah!
So as of this fall, this is how the war will rage:
4850 vs. 9800GTX+
4870 vs. GTX260
4870X2 (or whatever the new one will be) vs. GTX280 _________________
