Newegg ships same-day or next-day (except for out of stock or pre-orders.) They're great to do business with.

They say 3-day shipping, but their goal is 2-day. Expect it fast no matter what.

ok I have a final candidate for this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146443

Now I need to look for more RAM for the machine, I have a spare version of windows XP so I can format the machine and install XP instead, if I'm not mistaken only the 32 bit version of WinXP had a RAM limit of about 3 GB, correct? not quite sure about what type of memory I should get for it since newegg lists about 5 different types of them

I don't have any particular opinion on the relative merits of the hardware -- but all other things being equal I would definitely prefer Lenovo -- their reputation for support is one of the best -- while Asus is very spotty to downright negative.

Also I've had occasion to visit their tech support site several times to help members resolve problems -- and have found it fully stocked not just with appropriate driver downloads -- but manuals and "how to's" as well.

Heres the HP 9700t (17")
http://www.shopping.hp.com/series/category/notebooks/dv9700t_series/3/computer_store?aoid=35252

Use the $500 coupon code NB4796 ASAP. Note that the $150 instant savings goes away so this is effectively $350 off.

A fast T9300 CPU (2.4GHz 6MB L2 cache, penryn), 1680 x 1050 17" screen, 8600M GPU, 2GB RAM, 240GB HDD (second bay empty) will run you a little over $1000.

Not here. Ordering standard UPS 3-day nets me a 4- to 5-day wait (in Idaho). Repulsive but I can live with it; I've no experience using FedEx since they cost so much more...

I'm not too keen on HP, but I know their sub-brand, Compaq is just plain bad. Just stick to Lenovo, Cad, your choice is great but again comes with Vista instead of XP; I hope you're OK with that.

I thought the HP system looked pretty darn good hardware wise.

You might be surprised to learn that they are actually top-rated in online customer support these days.

Lenovo is up there too.

Actually I had the same problem with UPS. I had 2 Day upgraded shipping and it took 6 days total (4 business days) but it was no fault of Newegg's since they had it out the same day I ordered it.

Its the 32-bit limit for both processor and operating system. The limit is somewhere around 4GB but your RAM is the last to be addressed so its 4GB minus video memory, sound memory, BIOS/Motherboard, ect...

Checking this thread after a couple of really busy days, I went on a bought the Lenovo machine, thanks for the coupons though, Code. If I had seen them before I could have probably considered the HP machine instead.

In case you want a faster CPU for whatever reason:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111001

I've been drooling over this for some time now Razz
Comments say it works with the intel 945 chipset, which even older laptops have. (478-pin Micro FCPGA socket too)

Its not too hard. With the IBM construction and manuals its the easiest.
Its a lot easier than installing some of the custom heatsinks available for desktops now.

The screws underneath are clearly marked with pictures (and numbered) showing what each screw covers. (mobo, ram, hdd etc)

If you have some artic silver (thermal compound) you can improve the heat dissipation too.

btw my Compaq nc6400 has a T5500 CPU with is almost identical to the one you got. Its not bad but my home desktop flies circles around it. Spend a lot of time waiting on it at work....
